Her work as the lead singer of Big Brother and The Holding Company had brought her acclaim as one of the leading female rock vocalists in the world. This is why she didn't make the movie or CD trust me. Then there are the books, replica tchotchkes and commemorative events, mostly drawing on an artfully massaged memory of that weekend’s accidental wonder: That amid the frozen traffic, stressed food and medical services, and oceanic mud, “Half a million young people can get together and have three days of fun and music — and have nothing but fun and music!” as the late Max Yasgur, the farmer who welcomed the horde on his land, said from the stage on Sunday morning. Her Kozmic Blues Band period was not my favorite. This page works best with JavaScript. The Grateful Dead’s set was a notorious disaster, beset by equipment problems. I am so glad this is available. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. This was a funky-style outfit complete with a brass section whose playing was similar to the Stax rhythm and blues sound coming out of Memphis. If it had all been sun-shine and clockwork, with a tidy profit on the morning after, no one would have said another word. On every song she sang, her soul spoke to the listener's. Janis Joplin, Woodstock. There is a solid shot of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s roots-‘n’-TNT set and more of the Who’s enraged dead-of-night assault, if not enough of either. Her work as the lead singer of Big Brother and The Holding Company had brought her acclaim as one of the leading female rock vocalists in the world. Some have commented that she may've been tryin' to create a sound more like The Family Stone....i don't know....but those that think that they may not appreciate the new sound enough to get this CD....even tho they love Janis and Big Brother....here's my advice, if you like the 'I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again, Mama' CD and Janis' earlier stuff....you should love the Woodstock CD........my first impression of her 'new' sound was that the Blues Brothers band must've been backing her (sarcasm).....same 60s blues band sound....i even think Jake might've been as good on the vocals...please remember that the first Blues Brothers album was a hot seller and i'm not dogging Janis' new band...its just different....after my initial listen, i was unsure about how good i thought it was........on my second playing, i loved it.........some excellent...and i mean excellent... cuts and the least of the cuts are good......its a good slice of Janis in the soup of time........yeah, her voice failed her a tiny bit on one of her serious 'get down' moments.....but overall..it was real and in the moment of history.......and it is extraordinary, Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2018, Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2016. She did not appear in the original Woodstock movie or soundtrack and only one of her songs was included on the 25th and 40th anniversary editions. While no Janis Joplin album can ever be considered average, she does struggle in places trying to re-create herself as a rhythm and blues singer. It is crisp and clear which is amazing given the recording equipment of the time and the vastness of the outside arena which tended to wash out the sound. She sings with familiar fire but leads her big band with less assurance. I was totally disappointed with it, to put it Bluntly, I honestly thought she stunk. And business is booming. The director's cut adds an additional 45 minutes, including sets by Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane which were not in the original: Janis, so young, so filled with fierce energy, so doomed. I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama would be her only studio album with the group as they would part ways in 1969. The Woodstock Experience has gathered her complete ten-song Woodstock set and combined it with her I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Mama album which was released shortly after her performance. I have waited a long time to hear this. Janis showed up sans Big Brother and with a new back-up sound. Rolling Stone ultimately ranked her as the 46th greatest artist of all time and 28th greatest singer. There's a problem loading this menu right now. Jefferson Airplane: The Woodstock Experience — Four stars, Santana: The Woodstock Experience — Four stars, Sly and the Family Stone: The Woodstock Experience — Four stars, Johnny Winter: The Woodstock Experience — Three and a half stars, In This Article: That will give you a pretty good variety of Janis' material and different bands. Sly and the Family Stone were the only deep-R&B act on the bill, and from the shotgun start — a scat-and-gallop “M’Lady” into the smiling swagger of “Sing a Simple Song” — Stone is at the height of his party-politics command. Hendrix’s uneven but epochal finale was finally released in its near-entirety in 1999. She is probably MY favorite singer of All Time. This is the third album I have heard from this series and it has the best sound by far. 142 Views. I much prefer her Cheap Thrills album with Big Brother and The Holding Company or her posthumous Pearl. Its six CDs contain virtually all of Woodstock and Woodstock Two plus tracks from a 1994 box, then another 38 previously unreleased songs and actualities. Jefferson Airplane’s Sunday-dawn show is truly “morning maniac music,” as singer Grace Slick famously put it: fast and gnarly, spiked with crossed-sword vocals. Want more Rolling Stone? Sometimes she lets the band do too much which takes the focus away from her. Her funked up band tore it up at Woodstock. Yasgur’s breakfast speech, edited on the Woodstock album, appears in full on Woodstock — 40 Years On, a small but telling example of the box’s documentary detail and momentum. But for pure shock, nothing beat Santana’s 45 Woodstock minutes. He goes overlong on the solos but locks in with his original Texas rhythm section: drummer Uncle John Turner and bassist Tommy Shannon. I've seen her sing live before and NEVER was disappointed, just Impressed! (Each volume is a double CD with the act’s 1969 studio LP, a drag if you already own the latter.) But the result, combined with the full-length performances in the Woodstock Experience packages, is the most comprehensive and satisfying account so far of the main reason why Yasgur’s acres became an instant city of freaks, including me: the music. In fact I think it is one of the better sounding performances to have been recorded at the festival.
