Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, the wine-gauger of the town of Delft in the seventeenth century has come to be known in scientific circles as the "father of microbiology." Ed Yong’s I Contain Multitudes can be ordered from the Guardian bookshop. The difference between these two types of cells is threefold: unlike the cells of the prokaryotes, the cells of the eukaryotes have a central nucleus, an internal “skeleton” that provides structural support, and bean-shaped “power-stations” called mitochondria that provide energy. It is forbidden to copy anything for publication elsewhere without written permission from the copyright holder. We rate each piece of content on a scale of 1–10 with regard to these two core criteria. Unfortunately, the too-sensitive-for-everyone’s-sake modern parents tend to keep their children inside glass bubbles and, thus, do a disfavor to their immune systems and later health. Yong also weaves an interesting narrative about the Wolbachia bacterium into the book. Yong offers a different history of life than you likely learned in school and outlines possibilities for what bacteria might do for the world. Here he is describing Carl Woese’s discovery of archea, one of the three great kingdoms of life: “It was as if everyone had been staring at a world map only for Woese to quietly unfold a full third that had been hidden underneath.” The rise of DNA analysis in biology is rendered simply as: “The gentle caress of the cotton bud replaces the swing of a butterfly net.”. Start learning at the speed of today's world. In I Contain Multitudes, Yong nods to past, notable discoveries in microbiology research, while incorporating examples of current research that connect to his themes. The microbiome is one of the most talked-about topics in modern science, but it’s a complex and evolving field with important nuances often missed by the media. Now, during most of those eight months of our imaginary calendar when microorganisms ruled the world of the living, there were only prokaryotes around. SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, by By registering, you get 3 days Sometimes whimsical, sometimes poetic, always scientific, he approaches microbes with a sense of humor. In fact, in the absence of symbiotic microbes, life as we know it would quickly collapse—and yet it was only recently that microbes were understood to be more than disease-carrying bugs and more recently still that scientists have begun to understand their potential medicinal power. “This simple law that humans don’t seem to understand has a corollary: the extinction of a species, besides being a calamity in and of itself, has unforeseeable consequences for the system to which the species belongs.” The book is not without flaws. Reply. Yong begins by discussing of the sheer ubiquity of microbes, thousands of which exist in the air, food, water, and even on this very magazine page. Some of these proteins are anti-inflammatory, which means that afterward, they assume a role in our immune system as well. This book sounds so thought-provoking–thanks for sharing! Thank you. He also introduces a refreshing feeling of wonder—a feeling that is often ignored in books on similar topics—by highlighting the beauty of these microbial-animal interactions. Fortunately, you can experience New Year’s Eve in all its glory, because fireworks have been around ever since, well, 9 seconds ago. His chapter on horizontal gene transfer, the movement of genes from one organism to another without a parental-offspring relationship, was particularly interesting. These impacts are richly described in Multitudes, but even after we have become acquainted, our microbial companions feel strangely absent. microbooks in text and audio.
