It is set just before World War I , and chronicles the tragedy of Edward Ashburnham, the soldier to whom the title refers, and his seemingly perfect marriage, along with that of his two American friends. © 2020 eNotes.com, Inc. The two couples meet every summer at the spas in Nauheim, where they lead lives of leisure and dignified reserve. Written in 1914, The Good Soldier addresses what was perceived at the time to be society's shifting morality and loss of steadfast social rules. … [2], In 1998, the Modern Library ranked The Good Soldier 30th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. His first book, The Brown Owl, was a fairy tale illustrated by his grandfather and published in 1891, when Ford was only 18. He asks Dowell to take the telegram to his wife, pulls out his pen knife, says that it's time he had some rest and slits his own throat. The perfect English country gentleman he had known as Edward Ashburnham was really a man with a weakness for vulnerable young women—in fact, for nearly any woman but Leonora. Or all we meant to act on impulse alone? The novel traces Dowell's realization that appearances are not reality, that the four are not really "good people.". The fact is he has been disengaged, a voyeur. The two couples (Dowell and Florence, and Edward and Leonora) are the four main characters of the novel. The narrator sets his story up as a fireside conversation, a confession delivered in private to the reader. Ford showed interest and talent in writing early in life. Both Edward and Florence are in Nauheim because they have “hearts”; that is, they suffer from heart conditions. Edward wanted Nancy but gave her up then lost her. They travel together in Europe and become close friends. If readers suspend their trust in the narrator, some may be left with the impression that the narrator is happy his wife dies, as he does little to prevent it; just as he does little throughout the entire book. Taking place just before World War I, English novelist Ford Madox Ford’s 1915 publication The Good Soldier: A Tale of Passion recounts the story of Edward Ashburnham and his seemingly idyllic life with his wife and another couple who are their friends. As a pioneer of modernist innovation, Ford Madox Ford challenged traditional social structures, moral codes, and literary forms with The Good Soldier, a novel he considered to be his "best book of a pre-war period." The novel is told using a series of flashbacks in non-chronological order, a literary technique that formed part of Ford's pioneering view of literary impressionism. The novel is written through the eyes and mind of Dowell, the narrator. The narration is disorganized and disjointed, as the reader only learns the truth of the story as Dowell himself pieces it together. It can be both an act of power and of passion. .mw-parser-output cite.citation{font-style:inherit}.mw-parser-output .citation q{quotes:"\"""\"""'""'"}.mw-parser-output .id-lock-free a,.mw-parser-output .citation .cs1-lock-free a{background:linear-gradient(transparent,transparent),url("//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/65/Lock-green.svg")right 0.1em center/9px no-repeat}.mw-parser-output .id-lock-limited a,.mw-parser-output .id-lock-registration a,.mw-parser-output .citation .cs1-lock-limited a,.mw-parser-output .citation .cs1-lock-registration a{background:linear-gradient(transparent,transparent),url("//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d6/Lock-gray-alt-2.svg")right 0.1em center/9px no-repeat}.mw-parser-output .id-lock-subscription a,.mw-parser-output .citation .cs1-lock-subscription a{background:linear-gradient(transparent,transparent),url("//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/aa/Lock-red-alt-2.svg")right 0.1em center/9px no-repeat}.mw-parser-output .cs1-subscription,.mw-parser-output .cs1-registration{color:#555}.mw-parser-output .cs1-subscription span,.mw-parser-output .cs1-registration span{border-bottom:1px dotted;cursor:help}.mw-parser-output .cs1-ws-icon a{background:linear-gradient(transparent,transparent),url("//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/Wikisource-logo.svg")right 0.1em center/12px no-repeat}.mw-parser-output code.cs1-code{color:inherit;background:inherit;border:none;padding:inherit}.mw-parser-output .cs1-hidden-error{display:none;font-size:100%}.mw-parser-output .cs1-visible-error{font-size:100%}.mw-parser-output .cs1-maint{display:none;color:#33aa33;margin-left:0.3em}.mw-parser-output .cs1-subscription,.mw-parser-output .cs1-registration,.mw-parser-output .cs1-format{font-size:95%}.mw-parser-output .cs1-kern-left,.mw-parser-output .cs1-kern-wl-left{padding-left:0.2em}.mw-parser-output .cs1-kern-right,.mw-parser-output .cs1-kern-wl-right{padding-right:0.2em}.mw-parser-output .citation .mw-selflink{font-weight:inherit}ISBN 0-8160-4558-5. The novel's original title was The Saddest Story, but after the onset of World War I the publishers asked Ford for a new title. She gradually gets him out of debt. For example, Dowell marries an heiress who ostensibly has a bad heart. Nancy came to live with the Ashburnhams after leaving a convent where her parents had sent her; her mother was a violent alcoholic and her father (it is later suggested that this man may not be Nancy's biological father) may have abused her. Ford's novel defines and redefines normality. The reader must decide just how much of the truth Dowell reveals.
