The dense underbrush here is reflected throughout the film, which is set in 11th-century feudal times, and reflects the director's feeling that humans and nature are the sides of a coin. Sansho The Bailiff [1954] Review – A Contemplative piece on Idealism & its Repercussions. Whereas Ugetsu is spiritual and poetic, Sansho is worldly and realistic. He is known for the elegance of his compositions and the tact of his camera movement, and his theory "one scene, one shot," as in a famous scene in "Sansho" where the suicide by drowning of one of the characters is not shown, but merely indicated by ripples on the surface of a lake. The subplot dealing with the fateful rise of Zushio as Governor, criminalising slavery in his territory and arresting Sansho, feels rushed, given how significant the event holds for Zushio’s character arc. As many others have commented here over the years, this film is a masterpiece. More than just a story, this gives us a peek at the director's personal demons. The story centers around a prosperous family that was disgraced due to the father's progressive ideas (fairness and equality for peasants). The only minor hiccup in a rather painstakingly nuanced & well-written drama befalls after Zushio breaks free from Sansho’s manor. Like all great works of art, it is incomparable, although it would not be misleading to place it in the company of the very best of Renoir, Ford, and Kurosawa. So since itâs the same transfer the same issues there previously are still there. The film explores themes of redemption and acceptance as well as kindness and staying true to oneself and morality. Isn't life torture? Sansho is an unlovely man, a bully and sadist, who is surrounded by servile lackeys, all except for his son. slightly ahead of "ugetsu" which is also superb. ... Start your review of Sansho the Bailiff. I have been captivated every time by a heart of reflective images, but have had to work to unearth these against what is usually acclaimed about him. Somehow, in his films, even the lessor ones, it's easy to see how he can tap into what is essentially good, and essentially awful, in people and how they live in society, whether it's in a supernatural story like Ugetsu or a look at prostitution in Street of Shame. |, February 26, 2010 "Sansho the Bailiff" is a cinematic retelling of a 1000 year old folk tale. The only crime of the solicitous Governor is that he safeguarded the peasants from an inhuman military draft. Everyone is entitled to their happiness,” an ethical idealist governor shares this only treasure – an advise – with his son, Zushio – before he leaves his family behind for exile. Kenji Mizoguchi’s “Sansho The Bailiff” is a profound reflection on humanity & mercy with an underlying piercing melancholy. The camera does not move away from certain actions so much as decline to notice them, often because they are too painful or personal. |, April 5, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 Ozu of course also adheres to "one scene, one shot," but his camera never moves, and framing and composition are everything. In the case of "Sansho the Bailiff," it may be the unrelieved tragedy that strikes this good family for no good reason. I am looking for the title of a film I watched last year while in a flight. The sincere beauty of Kenji Mizoguchi's masterpiece Sanshô Dayû (aka Sansho the Bailiff) from 1954 is made even more persuasive due to its inherently understated, subtle (even humble), but philosophically resonant Japanese/Asian Cinematic style in which genuine emotional 'power' is authentically generated thru restraint by directly contrasting outward societal 'quiet complacency' versus paradoxical inner torment/ sparking the courage to steadfastly counter-act experienced injustices (which were many during Japan's 'Heian' feudal period, when this story took place). What we have here is a vision and an idea. That’s exactly what deeply hurt feudal lords who run private slave camps and the governing body that thrives on it. There is so much here that hit me deep to the core, so much that many years after watching it it still has some kind of a mysteriously profound effect upon me, and i guess that is the power art can have, the ability to in some way even affect your life. All Critics (16) You'll also find in-depth discussions on world cinema. Upward movement is hopeful, downward ominous. I never saw the ending and didn't know the name of the movie. |, June 7, 2013 One of the greatest accomplishments in the history of film, concerning a family torn apart after the father, a governor, is exiled due to sticking to his morals, and how the rest of his family is sold into slavery and prostitution after attempting to find him. It's also directed with an eye for the human face, how much pain and sadness and strength and doubt can show, and how to film around these characters. I don't consider SANSHO DAYU to be the best introduction to the great Kenji Mizoguchi, but - after many viewings, I do consider it to be the best of what I've seen. Kenji Mizoguchi’s melodrama – adapted from an epic folk tale and set in 11th-century feudal times – speaks to the modern world scarred by burgeoning capitalism and fascism.
