8. MechaGodzilla is one of my favourite monsters, mainly because he’s as powerful as the big G, and normally can only be taken down by two or more guys helping Godzilla. There are some titles I have excluded because whether or not they are robot movies are "fuzzy", such as "The Matrix" and its sequels, "Sonic The Hedgehog the Movie", "Impostor", "Sky Captain and the world of Tomorrow" and "Forbidden Planet". This big screen adaptation of the original manga was magnificently brought to life with stunning animation, most especially in regard to its cybernetic protagonist, Motoko Kusanagi.

Pretty classic ’40s robot look, plus, they breathed fire! Up until that moment, you had believed him to be a loyal company man, a traitorous man, and a murderous man, but a man nevertheless. ), The Borg became time-traveling stealth-assimilators, and The Collective instead emerged in First Contact as the sexy, Machiavellian Borg Queen. —M.B.
Armed with machine gun jubblies, these sexy but dangerous robots are almost the end of Austin Powers. And sea greens! Expertly aping and flouting the Clandestine Alien Invasion movie, Wright’s human-replacing, alien robot doppelgangers are actually pretty unnerving when they’re coming for you, and not bothering with the subtlety any longer. Even in a world populated entirely by mechanical beings Rodney Copperbottom is considered a genius inventor. David is a creation that rebelled against his creators, but he’s also an artist in his own right. Then he stays alive after decapitation. That poor, war-orphaned kid? I’m not crying, there’s just some motor oil in my eye. Its look and feel are so authentically 1940s pulpy movie serial, it could almost be mistaken for a recently unearthed classic from the day (if it weren’t for the genuinely impressive CGI effects and contemporary It-stars like Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie). Unlike Moses, however, Roy was angry as hell at his Maker, and by Tyrell, he was going to be heard. The Stepford Wives (1975)Saying that The Stepford Wives is a robot movie would be considered a spoiler in some quarters, since that’s actually the grand reveal — that these mindless, doting, superficial, immaculately coiffed housewives are, in fact, machines.

But without a hero, he loses all purpose and must find new meaning to his life. The ability to go intangible or rock hard, to fly, to fire a heat beam from his gem, super-strength … all in the basic stats of this guy. Menacing and creepy, yet with the veneer of helpfulness, Auto is one of the most effective baddies of the Pixar films, and helps lift Wall-E’s often overlooked second half into something thoroughly entertaining. Well, at least when they’re in a comedy film and voiced by Joan Rivers…. David (Haley Joel Osment), a model designed to be young boy, is bought by a couple eager for affection. Like the X-Men-terminating Sentinels in the previous entry, Syndrome’s line of superhero slaughterbots is startlingly good at rubbing out the “Supers”. Which was a bit shoehorned in. —S.W. The mostly stalwart robots in this tongue-in-cheek cult favorite fall pretty solidly in the Rock ’Em, Sock ’Em Robot school of design, which, actually, makes them stand out from most of the other entries on this list.
Blade Runner (1982)For all its revolutionary design and its status as an iconic sci-fi film, Blade Runner at times feels more like a philosophical exploration than a vision of the future. Title: The story of an uptown rat that gets flushed down the toilet from his penthouse apartment, ending in the sewers of London, where he has to learn a whole new and different way of life. Years before he wrote Jurassic Park, the author wrote and directed this ridiculously fun sci-fi Western-horror satire about a futuristic park where the android entertainers, chief among them a gunslinger played by Yul Brynner (doing a robot riff on his character from The Magnificent Seven), go haywire and start killing the visitors.
