Toronto Raptors swingman OG Anunoby wants big man Serge Ibaka to give him his credit for the scarf trend going on with the team right now. Did it provide optimism for how Anunoby might do against other bigs, particularly big men that aren’t maybe the best passing big man of all time? He moved toward Walker once he reached the paint, and Walker fed Theis with a perfect bounce pass for a dunk. Ibaka is averaging 15.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists on the season. Jayson Tatum looks to pass in the second half of Thursday's game. Ibaka has somewhat become a fashion guru with the Raptors this season. But, the data is the data. Once the playoffs start, the Raptors will ultimately go as far as Lowry and Siakam can take them, but the role players on the team must play at a high level as well. As one of the NBA’s best thieves when it comes to point-to-wing or wing-to-point passes, Anunoby’s finishing in transition leaves a lot to be desired. The Raptors were staring down a Nuggets matchup with both Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol out. The Raptors celebrate after OG Anunoby's 3-pointer at the buzzer beat the Celtics in Game 3. Timing is everything on the defensive end. It’s not a play type he actively seeks out, but if the paint is empty he’ll invest a couple seconds into a backdown. If you want more specific looks at what OG has done this year, you can read this stuff by me: Raptors Republic is in no way affiliated with the Toronto Raptors except the fact that we love them. We just didn’t communicate. After flashing a bit of explosion in the post, Nick Nurse & co. started to run a bit of flex action for Anunoby to establish post position early in games. He’s matching steps with offensive players and consistently meeting them at the summit – a battle he typically wins. ▪ The Raptors had some success with a matchup zone defense, particularly as they charged back from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter. Coaches and players alike learn things when put into tough positions, and there are few of those in the NBA that are tougher than trying to guard Nikola Jokic. The Celtics were in a zone defense, pointing and calling out switches, but no one noticed Raptors forward OG Anunoby sauntering along the baseline and planting himself in the far left corner. But Brown had his back to them as he guarded Pascal Siakam in the paint, and it did not look like Tatum yelled anything to him. On the bench, Kemba Walker was so nervous that something bad might happen that he could not watch. After losing both Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green last summer in free agency, most pundits thought the Raptors would be a middle-of-the-pack playoff team in the East. They are in second place in the Eastern Conference standings. Also, a barrage of 3-pointers can really throw these things out of whack. With the full regular season in the rearview, Anunoby ended up finishing at 50-percent (2PT) and 52-percent (3PT) shooting with 0-4 seconds on the clock. Subscribe to our daily newsletter to get more of it. Anunoby’s matured into one of the more complete players in the NBA, and is yet another example of … Great efficiency for that play-type. Anunoby is special. A true stage-setting season for what was to come in the form of a shocking Game 3 winner vs. the Boston Celtics. Late game performers stick around in the league for a long, long time. OG Anunoby gets set to connect on the game winner over Jaylen Brown. The shot went in, giving the Raptors a 104-103 win over the Boston Celtics that helped them avoid falling in a 3-0 series hole. They played obviously a lot of man, mixed up their matchups. ▪ Scoring aside, Tatum doesn’t get enough credit for his passing. His block percentage made a huge jump this year, and boasted the highest number among wings in the postseason (1.7%). His splits of 50/39/70 were a sight for sore eyes. They led by 2 points, and they just needed to stop Toronto from scoring. And the Raptors attacked him with success in the pick-and-roll. Both players have been the model of consistency this season thus far. He can space to the corner and hit on the spot-up, or pop-out after setting a quality screen.
