That egregious violation of good design principle: How does it sound? The Skylights are certainly not perfect — I apologize if I gave the impression that I thought they were — but they do possess a set of sonic virtues that appeals to me to a degree that any deviation from neutrality they're guilty of doesn't detract me from admiring their overall sound. His remaster of Legend sounds good to me, and I don't think I'm alone. There was no doubt that I had experienced audio playback of considerably higher fidelity than I had ever experienced from a two-channel system -JA. I needn't have worried.
No... "Science" can show, depending on the listener's skills, abilities,, and training, that the biases of visual cues may only last for minutes. All of those minimonitors make music small because they are small. John Atkinson described Totem Acoustic's Model 1 Signature, which was manufactured from 1997 to 2008, as "a little gem, a pur sang minimonitor" (footnote 1). Obviously nobody knows what response is ideal.
It has to to be rigorously quantitative--which of course was his goal. Should get an f3 about 90Hz, suitable for crossing to a decent sub. Sorry, I can't continue this conversation--I have a magazine to produce. The measurement is not sound. But the Signature One did something the Altec could not: sound pure, clear, and quiet. I did all of my critical listening sans grilles, and with the Signature Ones in the same spots where I like my Stirling Broadcast LS3/5a V2s: about 6' apart, and 28" from the speakers' front baffles to the wall behind them (ie, the room's front wall). We need more of your thoughts and discoveries. I'll save my main conclusions for the magazine. I don't think we need science to tell us that different people like different things--a fact that is illustrated in Stereophile every month and all across the world every day. It's not so much the dip which is curious, that's fine. My personal fun with the Totem Forest speakers began with the first track I played, Joe Walsh’s “Life’s Been Good.” The review pair arrived courtesy of an East Coast Totem dealer rather than directly from the Montreal factory, so some of the break in was already complete. They are still used by speaker designers today to model the behavior of drivers and enclosures. Totem Acoustics has a well-deserved reputation for producing small speakers with a big sound. However, I have found that listening to one speaker emphasizes differences in tonal character and coloration. Interpretation of data is key even though interpretation is inherently arbitrary and subjective.
Totem’s preference to call its speakers “columns” underlines the distinctive aspects that make up the Forest. You can bet that Vince is among the people who know this. The veneered cabinet is made of ¾"-thick MDF with lock-miter joints. His equations emphasized achieving phase linearity and minimizing crossover parts, which is why each Totem has its own unique woofer and tweeter combination.
The mid rolls off too soon, and the tweeter not soon enough. If I believed that, though, I would not have become Stereophile's editor. The phase errors induced by the broad overlap between drivers will make it challenging to find the optimum, and very narrow, vertical and horizontal axes. The Model 1s sat on heavy stands about 2' from the room's front wall; I sat in a low, plush chair about 15' away. Ice breaking sounds like hitting a empty barrel with a hammer. The Model 1's obvious quality impressed and annoyed me, in equal measure. Physically the ear of any reasonably astute listener - any fairly dialed in "high end" listener - easily and always transcends whatever the stack of boxes at the live end of the space *look like*. The Model 1 measured 12.5" high by 6.5" wide by 9" deep, weighed 9 lbs, and had 5" midrange/woofers.
"But, the reviewer could use aural memory for comparison with the product under review, using his chosen music recordings...". 1. Jaimie Branch’s Fly or Die albums are some of the best music to be released over the last few years. The good news is that it's become a question instead of a flat denial. Totem speakers have been widely acclaimed,[1] particularly for their dynamics, soundstage, harmonics, neutral timbre, and rhythm.
Something that should be noted about the Olive and Toole listening tests, at least as far as they were performed in the early 2000s when I visited Harman's testing facility, was that they were performed with one speaker, not two. Also notable was the separation between sounds, each seemingly allowed to exist and peter out at its own pace, unmolested by neighboring sounds even during busy passages. Even though it was generally understood that the speaker cabinet had a tremendous effect on a speaker's performance the majority were being built with a utilitarian, mass market approach using V groove and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) assembly with copious amounts of glue to keep it together. And there's probably just a capacitor and resistor in series with the tweeter.
This motivated me, over just the last few days, to audition a loudspeaker in mono. The Skys are easy speakers to underestimate; at a casual glance they just look so ordinary.
I let the Totems play 'round the clock with their grilles on, for two consecutive days. You would be a must-read! The upshot of utilizing the loading option instantly materialized on the music sources. The curiosity is just how far they'll take their folly before it dawns on them how it is one. Totem states on their website; “Due to the fact that all Totem speakers have great off-axis dispersion, toe-in is generally not needed. Totem says that the circuitry of the Signature One's second-order crossover comprises air-core inductors; resistors from Dale, RCD, and Archromic; 80-20 oxygen-free copper and silver wire; Cornell-Dubilier Orange Drop film capacitors; and ClarityCap high-voltage, paper-in-oil capacitors. Not only is the notion risible, it flies in the face of an enormous pattern of evidence, and science is made from evidence. Most amplifiers test very flat in EQ, but you all can hear differences that I probably could not anymore. The two-way Signature One is a rear-ported, reflex design; its 6.5" mid/woofer has a cellulose-acrylate cone and a 3" voice-coil, a cast-aluminum frame, and a neodymium magnet. It’s a question worth asking. The Totem's textures were delicate and discrete, not sturdy and upfront. The Forests spent the most time in my 13 x 19 foot family room, which has an 8-foot ceiling. Just please acknowledge that not everyone in this world likes or aspires to the same thing. While I also own 24" stands, which would have aligned the tweeters with my ears, by moving my head up and down along the vertical plane between the speakers, I felt that having the tweeters radiate above my ears improved the music's sense of scale and the size of its soundstage. Totem can build their own drivers completely themselves but the basic economics involved make it dramatically more cost efficient to improve existing designs, in turn keeping the cost on products remarkably affordable and capable of outperforming speakers that are much more expensive. Similarly, the crossover network is also robustly built with top-quality components and heavy wiring.
If required, the Forests produce serious bass, but you will need to spend time fine-tuning them to your liking. Thinking of recently reviewed offerings from Wharfdale, Elac, Quad, PSB, etc. That is something I'm very happy about. They have also seemed easy on the room for set up - and they almost always show well at shows, which is not a universally easy task. The Forest is a two-way design, featuring a 6.5-inch (165mm) woofer and a 1-inch (25mm) chambered aluminum dome tweeter, with a second-order crossover at 2.5 kHz. I think that's the pushback you see. And we know sighted reviews are full of bias. Peeking inside the cabinet reveals the same level of attention to the finer details. They really should do a rev. This initial speaker was named the Model 1, it was the ultimate consequence of Vince's unique approach and proprietary scientific tables, with a flat response starting all the way down the bass register to 30 Hz and up to 25 kHz. Unless you have small children or shed-prone pets, they will probably be unnecessary. Of course, if that's what you are after, go buy as many pairs as you can afford. A loudspeaker designed to the classical Toole template will sound the best to the largest numbers of people. Behind its 1" SEAS tweeter, which has an aluminum-titanium alloy dome, is a rear chamber designed to "correct resonances."
The Forests had a perfect balance of midrange clarity and sacrificed nothing in the bass department.
Meanwhile the subjectivist can be down in the sub-1dB window. They were playing "Wordy Rappinghood," from Tom Tom Club's first, eponymous album (LP, Sire SRK 3628), and sounding way too big and too overtly lively to be true. That said, I didn't play any solo piano works through the Skylights, and maybe if I had their port-related behavior might have become an issue. There are plenty of speakers out there of comparable size, at the grand-a-pair price or significantly lower, that are better engineered and would outperform these in just about every parameter. It's still being made today, at least in spirit (footnote 1). Their transients had strong starts and extended finishes. If possible, give the speakers at least 18–24 inches from any wall. Brooklyn, September 2017: I'm listening to Totem Acoustic's 30th anniversary edition of the Model 1. Balance. Sighted amplitude was the leading, if not the only metric of most objectivist speaker evaluation, and; 2. Totem recommends that you experiment with placement and toe-in.
