Ned trudges barefoot alongside a busy highway, then reaches a crowded public swimming pool. STEM. The two-disc DVD/Blu-ray combo pack is attractively packaged and is stuffed to the gills with extras, but first things first: the film itself looks stunning in a new high definition, 1.85/16x9 transfer. Certainly, there’s a good deal of drama in the vein of old school Hollywood. Their only other talk concerns material possessions or a show of interest in what the next person does for a living. A hero sets off on a journey. [8] Principal production took place during the summer of 1966, but the film was not released until 1968. Rather than watch Ned on his journey, we are whisked away into his oblivious state of mind. Ned shows up at the backyard pool of Shirley Abbott, a stage actress with whom he had an affair several years earlier. There’s also a feeling of experiencing something strange and unsettling. My Campy Slumber Party: Xanadu, Muses, and Disco, Oh My! Perry was ultimately fired by Spiegel sometime after the first cut of the film was screened. Discomfited by his intimate approaches, Julie runs away. [2] The film was written and directed by Academy Award-nominated husband-and-wife team of Eleanor Perry (screenplay adaptation) and Frank Perry (director). It is a grim, disturbing and sometimes funny view of a very small, very special segment of upper-middle-class American life. The seasons have changed by the time the swim is over. They use an abandoned, empty pool, which Ned urges the boy to imagine is filled with water. Ned beating on the doors of his dilapidated mansion at the end of his swimming journey is a moment worthy of Greek tragedy.
