The reason for Oakley's silence was finally revealed and then the book ended. The story is about a girl who grew up being sexually abused by her dad and his friend, from the age of five to thirteen. Silence: Natasha Preston February 12, 2014 February 12, 2014 I bought these books a while back when I was low on money (when aren’t I) but wanted something to read when putting of my dissertation, (yet again, when aren’t I?) Throwing the pressure to the left by using the boyfriend to tell the rest of the story just sickened me. Change ). I appreciated that this was now 4 years later and Cole and Oakley have not seen each other in those 4 years. Leave a link to your blog and I'll stop by. Geiger’s books a lot and she used to be on there as well) but I can’t help but feel as though Preston’s writing is too simplistic and that her thrillers aren’t even on par with middle-grade thriller books (I mean a lot more happens in a Goosebumps book than what occurred throughout this one). I mean, she went through bullying and constantly having her mother try to fix her instead of just coming out and say what happened. Beef #4: If I read this book correctly, Oakley stopped talking when she was 5, but Frank didn't actually rape her until she was 10. Showing how a girl can overcome abuse. Oakley Farrell stopped talking at the age of 5, and no one seems to know why. Cole is a neighbour and close family friend who has loved Oakley for years despite the small age … Iris feels her life is over and she doesn’t know what to do. Maybe I'm taking it too seriously, but come on--this is Oakley's story about finally having the strength to speak up, not her boyfriend's reaction to her struggle and his (and her family's) obliviousness! Oakley not speaking for eleven years basically didn't seem like a big enough deal to her family and friends, and then when she did finally speak, it wasn't heralded with enough importance. It was so easy to get wrapped up in this boo. Over the years, they have developed their own version of a normal friendship. Through those years Oakley was completely silent and would not talk to anyone until it finally stopped. It's very much a realistic fiction. It was very slow moving in the wrong areas and then rushed through in the parts I felt deserved more attention. Refusing to communicate beyond a few physical actions, Oakley remains in her own little world. She did not know how her family would responded. For eleven years, Oakley Farrell has been silent. The book was very short and I felt it took way too long to get to the heart of the matter. I gave it 4 stars just because the book was a little slow, but I enjoyed the story overall. The story starts in Australia where Oakley, her mom, and her brother, Jasper, moved from England after Oakley had finally gone to the police about the situation at 16. You're listening to a sample of the Audible audio edition. Good book. Just like the first book in the sequel, Broken Silence by Natasha Preston is an amazing love story with a big twist. At the age of five, she stopped talking, and no one seems to know why. Silence itself was a frustrating read for myself, concentrating on day to day events and rushing the main issue. That would infuriate me, too! then there was no duscussion of what would happen after the trial, even though cole was buying a house. The story races then to the end everyone probably expects. At school I drifted through, achieving average grades. I finished this book in a week, and I simply couldn't put it down!!!! Picture Window theme. But in this case my frustration with the stupidity of this long, painful drawn out dirge made even me give up at 32%. I respect them. It takes a lot of strength for someone to hang on as long as she did. First, I found the whole romance between Cole and Oakley to be sweet, most known-you-all-my-life romances are. She's been friends with Cole Benson since before she could even talk,(which is before she stopped). Natasha Preston has become one of my favorite authors ever!! [except her father because the stupid shithead deserved to be locked away for life. I've decided to re-read Natasha Preston's Silence series because a number of years have passed since I first read the books (it was before I starting writing reviews) and I wished to remind myself just why I call this series one of my top favourites.
