Both models have microSD cards for expanding storage cheaply. That entails a 13MP f/2.0 main sensor paired with a 5-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide back-up. The latter is a very new feature to have on iPad, but it's one we griped about missing there, but that's now been fixed, leaving Samsung further behind. The only performance issue I noticed was in Pen Up, and that’s almost certainly down to the coding of the app, not the power of the CPU. A 128GB iPad plus Pencil costs £498 – that’s £120 less. I do think Samsung gets closer to the Apple Pencil-like quality feel here than some previous stylus tabs. It costs a lot less and still performs all the usual tablet jobs perfectly well. But putting a hole for it in the case, like the Note 10, would likely mean losing a significant chunk of battery. More recent Android features are here, too. A dual-camera might not sound like a particularly noteworthy feature in a world where we’re seeing quad-camera smartphones. The lack of palm detection on the screen can make using the stylus a little annoying, especially depending on how you write. And PUBG will run using its highest graphics setting. While One UI’s features work well on tablets, Google has been struggling for years to create a decent tablet operating system, and Android itself still doesn’t work as well on slates as Apple’s iPadOS does. The display is a 2560x1600 AMOLED panel, and it’s a real looker – HDR10+ support makes cinematic video look beautiful, and photos look gorgeous on it, thanks to the excellent contrast provided by OLED. Android tablets to date have typically come up a little short compared to iPads in terms of the user experience, and that’s the case here. There’s loads of power on offer in the Tab S6 – we’ve yet to make it struggle using an app for drawing or editing or anything like that. Using the S Pen as a remote trigger for photos is more useful, though with the usual caveat that you're probably not taking that many selfies on your tablet, really. It runs Android 9.0 with the Samsung’s One UI on top. No. Learn More. Of course, nowadays even the basic iPad supports the Pencil. The S6 balances things well, but the red flowers seem a little false. That would be pretty unremarkable sounding in a mid-range smartphone, but it’s fairly advanced for a tablet, where photography really isn’t a priority. Some of the colors did seem to be artificially ramped up to our eyes, but then Samsung is a sucker for punchy colors. This cheap Samsung TV deal saves you £300, and it's not even Black Friday yet! Display You will receive a verification email shortly. The stylus is pressure sensitive (4096 levels), and when you add that to the surprising depth of Sketchbook Pro, you end up with quite an engaging and useful drawing tool. This is very handy if you tend to overuse YouTube or social media apps, or want to make sure the kids don’t spend hours each day playing PUBG. Press the power button and you’ll see the scanner position on screen. There's also an 8MP forward-facing cam. From the price to the screen size and various features, the device feels very much like it’s been designed to tempt potential buyers from the iOS ecosystem to the Android tablet one. Some of its stats are very iPad like, too. The S5e manages just 1596. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite comes with the S Pen stylus in the box, which is a useful addition for drawing, sketching and taking notes. It makes for an excellent games or media device thanks to that screen, but it's fairly expensive for that – you might be better off looking at an older Samsung tablet for a bargain. Both of these prices are for 64GB storage models, which is the only version available in the UK, while in Australia only 128GB slates are available, at AU$649 for Wi-Fi-only and AU$799 with Wi-Fi plus an LTE connection. Thanks to a trimming down of screen borders the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is a similar size to classic 10.1-inch tablets. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is the best Android alternative to an iPad Pro. There’s also 1080p video recording, both on the rear and front cameras. The Tab S6’s problem is that Apple squeezes it on both sides: it’s cheaper than an iPad Pro, but not quite as advanced for productivity, doesn't have the larger screen option, and the pen is a little laggier. There was a problem. So the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite isn’t the perfect mid-range slate, but there’s still a lot here to like, and if the features on offer here, like the S Pen, good screen and low price, appeal to you, then it’s certainly worth considering as an alternative to the entry-level iPad. The S Pen's small nib feels quite soft when you're drawing on the screen, which isn't totally ideal for feedback (especially since there's a smidge of lag), but it's not really a problem. This means that when you’re watching content you don’t have prominent black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, as you’ll find on iPads, which tend to have 4:3 displays. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is the best Android tablet. We eventually got used to this, but when using the device alongside an iPad with an Apple Pencil the issue is rather noticeable. There are two colours available: Mountain Grey and Rose Blush. The result is that when you’re looking at something dark, for example if you’re using Android 10’s dark mode, the display still appears bright, which isn’t as relaxing for your eyes, and doesn’t seem to save battery much either. And while Android now has some decent audio sequencing and composing apps, they tend to be either less friendly or less versatile than Garageband. This is paired with 4GB RAM. Sharp focus and fine detail on this pink flower. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6’s software is just like that of Samsung’s phones, with one important difference: DeX makes much more sense here. Battery life There’s an 8MP camera around front, though we suspect this will be used mostly for video calls. This is a problem the Tab S6 Lite has in common with all LCD devices though. The hanging decoration is nice and sharp while the background light source isn’t too washed out. As a media tablet, this is definitely a great option, especially when you factor in the impressive speakers, which are loud, clear, and give solid stereo separation when it’s square in front of you. Thank you for signing up to TechRadar. There's no 4K video recording, though, which is a bit of a shame. Another problem is that Android, or at least Samsung’s One UI take on Android, just isn’t as good a tablet operating system as iPadOS, although there are features and perks that might make up for this, especially in the stylus department. Sorry, Samsung. The iPad Pro with Apple Pencil is as responsive as drawing tools get, but there’s clear (though small) lag when drawing with the S Pen. This is a top-end CPU made by the most popular producer of such chipsets. These include Create Note, which brings up a small window you can scribble onto, Screen Write, which lets you take a screenshot and annotate it, and AR Doodle, which we’ve already mentioned. If, though, you like a snappy user experience, and a stylus experience that isn’t affected by one or two annoying issues, perhaps an iPad is better for you. Add in the benefits of the efficient Snapdragon 855 chipset, and there seems to be no reason to worry. On the back, you've got a dual camera setup – a 13MP standard camera, plus a 5MP ultra-wide cam. Because of the aforementioned slight sluggishness and the lack of a physical keyboard option, it can be difficult to compose lengthy documents on the tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite runs Android 10 with Samsung’s One UI laid over the top. There are four drivers, positioned to provide stereo sound when the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is held landscape. The 128GB version with 4G costs £689 RRP, while the 256GB version costs £759. We certainly didn't find it dead overnight or anything like that in any case, though. While the hardware is good but not great, the amount of different modes available for selfies will be a pleasant surprise for many. You can choose between Natural and Vivid colour modes, neither of which offers the ultra-reserved sRGB colour tuning seen in older Samsung tablets. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, the same used by the US version of the Galaxy Note 10+. But the Galaxy Tab S6 is the first Samsung tablet to feature a multi-camera setup. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is $649 if you go for the model with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. We use industry standard tests in order to compare features properly. That’s especially true if you’re just looking for a tablet for occasional use, as you won’t have to continually power it up between sessions. Should I buy it? So if you’re just looking for a portable device for watching movies or TV shows, you could do a lot worse. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite comes with the S Pen included, which makes it a great choice for anyone looking for a slate they can use a stylus with . The Tab S6 is in the same league as iPads for stamina. But you can get media-focused tablets for less, and the iPad range simply offers more for work. The desktop DeX mode continues to be an interesting option that still feels too niche – if you want a laptop that turns into a desktop, Microsoft is your better bet, especially since there's no question of app support there. The secondary camera, in particular, opens up the possibility of some interesting wide-angle shots, as well as enabling exaggerated bokeh Portrait snaps. What sounds reasonably decent on paper turns out to be just so in practice. This mainly brings a change to the appearance of ‘stock’ Android, although as with all Android forks there are some other changes too. This retains all the usual Android basics, but the app drawer is arranged in pages rather than as a scroll. In addition, the 5:3 aspect ratio is just a step off 16:9 (it’s 15:9 to be precise), which is the aspect ratio lots of TV shows and streaming movies are broadcast in. DeX is Samsung’s desktop-like interface for Android. Don’t confuse this for a set of cameras intended to compete with Samsung’s top or mid-range phones, though. For movies, the Tab S6 definitely has an edge over the iPad Pro, but it lacks in a couple of other areas: it can’t go as bright, it doesn’t have Apple’s easier-on-the-eyes True Tone tech (you’ll notice a blue tint to whites on the Tab S6’s screen when using it in warm home light), and it doesn’t have the 120Hz refresh rate. That’s only 0.1 inches smaller than the non-Lite tablet, but the lack of that slate’s higher-resolution AMOLED panel is one of the sacrifices of this budget tablet. The Digital Wellness part of the settings menu lets you set usage timers per app.
