down, Mad Love is an underappreciated little horror gem. | Original title: The Hands of Orlac. Probably this version will be shown in TV. A magician and conman, Nero, with his sexy Vietnamese assistant, try to blackmail Orlac and to that purpose devise plots that further push the pianist off his mind. Movies Silently is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, and as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This very much reminds me of the warped stuff Lon Chaney was churning out for MGM prior to his death. He is positively gleeful at the thought of his son’s destitution and vows to not lend a single cent to the couple. Unfortunately, the hands belonged to a murderer, and he finds the hands starting to take over his life and commit crimes. Then he receives an anonymous note informing him of the origin of his new hands. The senior Orlac lives in isolation in a creepy manor and he is a real charmer. Itself almost certainly a product of the traumas of the Napoleonic Wars, the story is about three surgeons who remove body parts and replace them to show off their skills. The Fritz Kortner character turns out to be Nera, the assistant of Dr. Serral. A world-famous pianist loses both hands in an accident. The Silent. I mean, really, really loves his horror plays. The mysterious Fritz Kortner has some kind of hold over the Orlacs’ maid, Regine (Carmen Cartellieri), and she is helping to convince her employer that his hands are murderous. I played around with the speed and found that running it about 30-40% faster made the whole thing much more watchable. Modern horror isn’t really my thing but I do love a good dose of the classic stuff. Peter Lorre is absolutely the main attraction but if you turn off your brain and enjoy the lurid aspects, I think you will find much to like all around. The Talkie. It looks like we don't have a Synopsis for this title yet. Next day newspapers run two headlines next to each other: the ruin of his hands, as well as the execution of the strangler Louis Vasseur. Orlac asks the surgeon about the hands and learns that he belonged to a criminal, and Orlac decides to never touch Yvonne again with those hands. The lonely mansion of Orlac’s father is a moody Dracula’s castle with medieval furnishings and the tavern where Orlac meets Nera is as seedy as one could hope for but seedy and/or gothic does not equal Expressionism. The characters of Nera and Dr. Serral are combined into Dr. Gogol (Lorre), a kindly and brilliant surgeon who cures children and loves his horror plays. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’s symbolism has been linked to the War as well, though there is still much debate about just what that film meant. Interestingly, Mad Love focuses on class and station considerably more than The Hands of Orlac. Yvonne Orlac: Alexandra Sorina swoons a lot but she does take charge of the situation near the end. ?” feel to it that I enjoy. (Some of the shots are taken from two slightly different angles, cameras cranking side-by-side.). Direction: While there are some glorious moments in the 1924 film, Karl Freund brings the right mood to the party despite a reportedly tortured shoot. Short on actual blood, long on atmosphere. While The Hands of Orlac is not strictly the first Evil Hand film, it does seem to be the earliest one to use the trope for chills rather than giggles. And yet, is it really that much more stylized than Veidt’s turn as Cesare in The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari? The pianist Paul Orlac is on tour and his wife Yvonne Orlac anxiously waits for his return. The Hands of Orlac One day, famous pianist Orlac badly hurts his hands in an accident. But then he realizes that if he can drive the nervous Stephen over the edge, Yvonne will be single once more…. To enable him to resume piano playing, his purpose in life, Orlac′s surgeon decides to transplant Orlac the hands of a recently executed robber and murderer. But thanks for a well-argued and analytical post yet again, even if I don’t agree completely with your assessment. Questions from the Google: Daddy Long Legs and Judy Abbott age difference? (I truly believe there is no market for a Finnish release – even though this was a big event, probably most of the people were there because of the music, classical music is so much more popular than classic films.). (Think Florence Lawrence in The Country Doctor.). I’m sad to say I agree with you on “Orlac”. I’ve watched “Orlac” and “Mad Love” several times over the years, always preferring the Lorre for the reasons Fritzi Kramer so well develops in her review. The Hands of Orlac is a film directed by Edmond T. Gréville with Mel Ferrer, Christopher Lee, Dany Carrel, Lucile Saint-Simon .... Year: 1960. As stated before, Mad Love has been panned for decades by critics who, I assume, also hate ice cream and rainbows. And the patient has a tense relationship with his rich father? During recovery of his surgery, in Orlac's mind his hands aren't his own any longer, they are Vasseur's. She begs Dr. Gogol to save his hands. Let’s face it, Nera’s plot to blackmail Orlac is an extremely bizarre and roundabout way to come into some cash, especially since the two men seem to have zero personal connection. Orlac is a world famous pianist. And Expressionism had pretty much run its course by 1924. It’s a shame. The film also features a decent stable of character actors. I always roll my eyes when anyone tries to equate shadows in film noir with “German Expressionism.” Using shadows expressionistically is not the same as expressionism, and all shadows are not expressionistic, even if they look cool and provide great atmosphere. There are certainly elements of The Hands of Orlac that can be considered Expressionist. The Copper Beeches, for example, is outrageously overacted in comparison to other films of the time and is quite hilarious as a result. Fun Size Review: Skinner’s Dress Suit (1926), Movies Silently Podcast Episode 01: Death and Tinting with Christopher Bird – The 25th Frame, The Best Films of 1920, According to Photoplay Magazine, The Merry Widow (1925) A Silent Film Review. I love Veidt’s performance in the film, but I do understand that his theatrical dance-like routine is an acquired taste. This is hardly an exhaustive list but I hope it illustrates the ongoing popularity of the trope. There is even a somnambulist sequence in which Orlac allows his hands to take over and Veidt’s body language is Cesare all the way. I’m not that surprised you went for the talkie version. Rich and famous concert pianist Stephen Orlac flies to France to marry beautiful Louise Cochrane. We’ve already established that studios and audiences cannot get enough of the Evil Hand trope so it was almost inevitable that The Hands of Orlac would be remade in the sound era. I have basically nothing to add because you said it all – great direction, wonderful antihero in Peter Lorre and I really like Frances Drake’s character. Brophy seems to be enjoying himself as a breezy killer and friend to all but it is a bit of a shock when he gets the chop. We’re in the realm of horror and symbolism, I know, but the film lacks the necessary venomous punch to become a true classic. Now, I’m afraid I have to be a bit of a heretic here but… Paul Orlac is not very interesting. A twisted little mind. I personally do not think so. Apparently, the Hayes office was most worried about the train wreck being too violent. Unfortunately, there is a mix-up and instead of their own parts, they are given the stomach of a pig, the eyes of a cat and the hands of a thief. He answered that he had wanted a DVD, but people had told there’s no market. We’ll go deeper into the history of this long-lived trope but first, an examination of the main attraction. Hands of a Stranger is a 1962 American horror film directed by Newt Arnold and is unofficially the fourth film adaptation of The Hands of Orlac. Yikes! Perhaps this sparseness was meant to symbolize Orlac’s isolation or his status as a newly-successful musician but it doesn’t really work. In spare, boring sets, the broad gestures seem even larger but a weirder, wilder world would have created an appropriate equilibrium. Please consider sponsoring me on Patreon. And so the younger Orlac’s finances continue to erode until he finally swallows his pride and goes to his father himself. As it happens, Serral is about to receive the body of a recently-guillotined murderer named Vasseur. Maybe the incredibly multitalented atmosphere of the Järnefelt family prepared Armas for combining different art forms. I realize that cruel blackmail schemes against strangers happen all the time in the real world but in films, we need something a bit more concrete to be invested in the story.
