( Log Out /  The film was given a limited international theatrical run, for which it was re-titled Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure. As previously mentioned, Terak’s castle is like a low-rent version of Jabba’s Palace. Cindel promises to visit them as soon as she can before getting onto Noa’s star cruiser and leaving Endor. However, before they can go, Wicket and Cindel must face off against the evil Marauders after they capture all the Ewoks, and kill Cindel’s family. Perhaps most importantly, Cindel’s isolation as the only member of the Towani family allows her to create a surrogate family with Noa and the Ewoks. Cindel’s isolation also allows for The Battle for Endor to mimic The Wizard of Oz in structure and content. Cindel leaves the safety of Noa’s ship to go and save her friend, but ends up being captured by Terak. Shortly thereafter, the Ewoks kill a boar wolf only to find a life-monitor from one of the Towani parents with the creature. Picking up several months after the events of Caravan of Courage, The Battle for Endor finds Cindel Towani (Aubree Miller) and her family living with Wicket (Warwick Davis) and the other Ewoks of Endor. A caravan of Ewoks is formed to help the children find their parents. The Marauders are killing Ewoks and burning the village, but they are also capturing some of the Ewoks for unknown purposes. But there are moments of visual wit and competent action construction. On their journey they meet Noa, an old hermit who’s also looking for a way home, and his small but fast companion Teek. The Battle for Endor goes even further than A New Hope in echoing The Wizard of Oz, with deliberate reference points and an entire climactic sequence that seems to copy the older film, beat for beat. During the raid, Cindel’s mother and Mace are killed. Eventually, Cindel is captured and Noa, Wicket, and Teek have to venture to Terak’s castle to rescue her and retrieve the power source to power Noa’s starship and finally leave Endor behind. Wickett intervenes in the battle, using his slingshot to kill Terak. After Mace tries to kill them, the Ewoks subdue him and take both children to the Ewoks’ home. For those of you who don’t regularly revisit George Lucas’ forays into direct-to-TV movies, Cindel is the young star of both Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: The Battle For Endor. But as far as low-budget children’s fantasy entertainment goes, The Battle for Endor is more competent than the first film, and seems of a piece with other family-friendly 1980s fantasies like Jim Henson’s Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal and The Neverending Story. Writer(s): Bob Carrau (screenplay) and George Lucas (story). The song is one that her mother used to sing to her, so she proceeds to go into the forest alone. Charal is also thrown into a cell because of her failure to find someone to activate the “power.”. It’s not an overwhelmingly clever sequence, but it’s funny and satisfying; it achieves the kind of light-hearted adventure that you want of a children’s fantasy film. At the Marauder’s castle, the leader Terak orders Charal to find Cindel, believing that she is last one who may know how to use the “power”. Thus, the film defaults to having Mace be the normalizing presence for the viewer, the person who we experience the story through. However, both The Wizard of Oz and The Battle for Endor subvert an element of the Hero’s Journey in their approach to the magical item at the centre of their stories. Instead, he simply serves as a rockbed of support for Aubree Miller, Warwick Davis, and Niki Botelho to play off of. Another moment in the battle has Noa furiously working to fix his star cruiser like Han Solo working on the Millennium Falcon in the asteroid field in The Empire Strikes Back. They encounter Teek, a small and extremely fast native of the planet. Terak’s misunderstanding of the true source of magic is his undoing, as Wicket unleashes the ring’s power with a blow from a slingshot, which destroys Terak. It helps that Terak and the Marauders are more tangible villains than the Gorax. As well, A New Hope contained elements of The Wizard of Oz, such as its narrative about a poor orphan on a farm escaping to a larger world and the quest to save this world from a villainous tyrant, even if it echoed Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress to a larger degree. While being transported by the Marauders, Cindel and Wickett are able to escape from the cages due to their small size. Learn how your comment data is processed. Distributor(s): 20th Century and Disney-ABC Domestic Television. In The Battle for Endor, Cindel doesn’t have the ship’s power source the entire time, but the power source itself has no true magical powers. John Korty, who had directed the Lucas-produced Twice Upon a Time, was selected as director. Terak’s castle is a more generic castle than the Wicked Witch’s in The Wizard of Oz—it’s essentially a standard fantasy version of Jabba’s Palace—but the infiltration sequence is largely the same as the one in The Wizard of Oz. One morning, Cindel is awoken by a song in the forest. Charal and the Marauders are seeking the “power” and believe that Jeremitt has it. Change ), You are commenting using your Twitter account. As the film progresses, the repetitions continue to stack up. Change ), You are commenting using your Google account. The trio is able to sneak into the castle and free Cindel and the other Ewoks. The Gorax is thought destroyed when it is knocked into a chasm, but it takes a final blow from Mace (using Chukha-Trok’s axe) to kill the creature, which tries to climb back up after them. Wicket, Noa, and Teek infiltrate the castle, disguise themselves in one costume (which is an absurd image), and break into the dungeons to free Cindel. Cindel is thrown into the cells with the other captured Ewoks. It’s then up to her three companions, Wicket, Noa, and Teek—echoing Dorothy’s three companions, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion—to infiltrate the villain’s lair and rescue her. Working from a story written by George Lucas and a screenplay by Bob Carrau, director John Korty transformed the scenic northern California redwood forests into the forest moon of Endor. Producer(s): George Lucas, Thomas G. Smith, and Patricia Rose Duignan. Directed by Jim and Ken Wheat; written by Jim and Ken Wheat, based on a story by George Lucas; starring Wilford Brimley, Warwick Davis, Aubree Miller, Paul Gleason, Carel Struycken, Niki Botelho, Eric Walker, Siân Phillips. It shows that even as far back as 1985, the Star Wars franchise was a tale of recursion, reflecting back on itself even as it sought to broaden its world. The guards are playing a card game and Teek tricks them into shooting each other by slipping a card into the one guard’s sleeve, knowing it’ll provoke a fight when the other finds out. In this technique, during live-action photography, a section of the camera lens is blocked off and remains unexposed. Lucas also hired Bob Carrau, the nanny of his children, to co-write the story with him. The evil lord of the Marauders orders Cindel to activate the “power,” but the small child doesn’t know how. Production: Lucasfilm, Korty Films, and 20th Century Fox Television. Calling themselves W&W Productions, Eric and Warwick shot a documentary of the making of the film, which was released to Eric’s YouTube channel in 2014.
