The Accra-born player is a product of Ghana Premier League side Wafa, formerly the Feyenoord Academy. [6], In January 2013, Mensah signed an extension to his contract, committing to Watford until 2016. The 25-year-old was confirmed to have contracted the disease following a medical examination on his return from international duty.

Bernard Mensah’s follow-up and treatment process was initiated in accordance with the relevant protocols,” a statement by the club read. He has previously also played for Kasimpasa in Turkey, Atletico Madrid and Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal. Should Mensah fail to make a quick recovery, he could miss his club's Turkish Super Lig clash with Denizlispor on October 26. [1] He made his senior debuts with the reserves in the 2012–13 campaign, scoring nine goals and earning promotion to Segunda Liga. [15] He made his first appearance for the club as an 80th-minute substitute in their 3–1 win against Bradford City on 20 January 2018. [17], In January 2020, Mensah's loan spell with Maidenhead was terminated early and he joined Gloucester City permanently on an 18-month contract for an undisclosed fee.[18]. Mensah's time with the Ghana national team was his maiden call-up in five years. Both matches were played in the Turkish city of Antalya, a situation requiring no international travel for him during the course of the national assignment.

His absence will be a blow for The Black Eagles who are looking to climb further up on the league table after a not-so-good start to the season.
[13], On 8 June 2015, Mensah made his debut for Ghana in a match against Togo, scoring the only goal of the game.
